Tractor History

Purchased by Arthur Gibbs in 1956, this tractor was the most powerfull dry land tractor on the market at that time. This was the first of it's type in the area.

SPECIFICATIONS
ENGINE
  • GM Detroit Model 3-71, 3 cylinder vertical in-line 2 stroke diesel, bore 4.25", stroke 5.00".
  • Engine Speed 1,200 - 1,500 rpm. Compression ignition.
  • Displacement 71 cubic inch per cylinder, compression ratio 16:1
CRANKSHAFT
  • Drop - forged.  Carbon Steel "Tocco Hardened."   Counter Balanced.
BEARINGS
  • Four Main Bearings 3.5" dia.  1.125" long.   Copper Lead.  Steel backed.  Replacement Type.
  • Con Rod Bearings 2.750" dia.  2.125" long.
CONNECTING ROD
  • Drop - Forged.  Heat - treated carbon steel.  Rifle drilled for lubrication.
CYLINDERS
  • Replacement liner.  Hardened Alloy Cast Iron.   Slip Fit.
LUBRICATION
  • By submerged Gear Type Pump.  Warm oil is forced by pump through an Oil Cooler into Main and upper cylinder Block Galleries.   A replacement element type filter removes undesirable solids and moisture.
COLD STARTING AID
  • A highly volatile liquid is injected into the air intake system to assist cold starting under extreme conditions.
HORSEPOWER at 1,500 Engine R.P.M.
  • 85.0 Max. engine crankshaftat 1500 rpm.
  • 78.0 Max. belt, 65.4 Rated belt.
  • 70.0 Max. drawbar, 52.5 Rated drawbar.
FUEL
  • Diesel. Fuel tank capacity 30.0 imp.gallons.
FUEL SYSTEM
  • Full Flow System used to cool Injector Units and eliminate air.   Fuel Oil is drawn through Primary Filter by by Fuel Pump and forced through Secondary Filter.
INJECTORS
  • General Motors Unit Type.  Capacity 70 cub. mm.
COOLING
  • Water circulated through engine and radiator by centrifugal pump mounted on engine.
  • Temperature controlled by thermostat.
  • Temperature Gauge on Instrument Panel.
GOVERNOR
  • Mechanical. Controlled by hand lever.
ELECTRICAL
  • 12 Volt starting and lighting system.
CLUTCH
  • Over-centre type, driving plate is carried by involute splines in fly-wheel ring gear.  A ball-bearing clutch release collar is provided.  Clutch operation is by conveniently placed hand lever, which also permits operation from behind tractor platform to facilitate coupling up of implements.
TRANSMISSION
  • A three speed and reverse sliding spur gearbox mounted on the rear of the engine, providing nine forward gears and three reverse.
  • Gears are forged from high grade alloy steel and case hardened.
DIFFERENTIAL
  • Bevel - gear type with hypoid crown wheel and pinion, running at four times rear wheel speed.
FINAL DRIVES
  • Two large ( 18 inch diameter ) case-hardened bull- gears meshing with pinions on the differential shaft.
  • Rear axles are 3.50 inches in diameter, high tensile steel.   Rear wheels are mounted on long splines through tapered clamping sleeves.
STEERING BRAKES
  • Individual steering brakes with separate pedals to assist steering under exceptional circumstances.
SERVICE BRAKE
  • A powerful brake operates on both rear wheels through compensating mechanism.
STEERING
  • Recirculating ball type steering gear.
  • Connected to front wheels by adjustable draglink and track rods fitted with ball joints.
POWER TAKE-OFF
  • Splined shaft is to the A.S.A.E. standard of 1.375" 6B.
  • Shaft speed is 540 rpm at 1200 engine rpm.  Clockwise rotation (viewed from rear).
  • This power take-off is capable of transmitting full engine power continuosly.
BELT PULLEY
  • Belt Pulley attachment is provided with bevel-gear drive at rear of differential housing.
  • Pulley - 13.0 in. diameter x 7.0 in. wide.
  • Pulley Speed - 810 rpm. at 1200 R.P.M.
  • Belt Speed - 2,740 ft. per minute

  • Front - 8.25 x 20 x 6 ply on split cast wheels.
