Tractor History
This tractor was purchased from Clem Thiel by John Gibbs in January 1978. John had left the family farm
in September 1975 to work as a truck driver for Loxton Co-op. As farming was still his passion, John share
farmed an 1100 acre property for Mr Nick Stanitzke of Loxton. From 1985, John share farmed for his father
Keith Gibbs at at Pyap (near Loxton) for a few years.
Since 1990 this tractor, shedded at the Pyap property has not been used. In October 2001 The Gibbs
Family Tractor Collection had a display of Chamberlain Tractors at the Loxton Annual Spring Show. As this
year was the 50th Anniversary of Chamberlain, Vic Gibbs was keen to have a Countryman 6 in the display. John
being his normal self said 'If ya want her, come and get her'. Vic and his brother Colin travelled the 30km
from Wunkar to Pyap to collect the 'Old Lady'.
We'll never start her after ten years, with rotten fuel and oil as black as mid-night, it'll take all
day just to get the oil pressure up commented Vic. Now Colin, a little more optimistic, replied 'She'll be
right', powered by a Perkins you know. Colin fitted a battery, while Vic checked the water and oil levels. The
moment of truth was now upon them both, would she fire up and bring a smile to Colin's face or would they be
there till dark as Vic predicted. Colin was given the honors, no toss of the coin here as Vic was the elder
statesman. Colin turned the key, the starter engaged, fan blades turned about 270 degees and she roared into
life. No worries about oil pressure, she's got that too yelled Colin.
John now has this tractor on display in the Gibbs Family Tractor Collection at Wunkar. This tractor is now
taken to shows and rallys and enjoys the odd tractor pull he and there. Vic even gives her a few farm chores
now and then just to keep her active.
